About Phanigiri :-
It is a famous Buddhist site located 110 km from Hyderabad. It gets its name from the shape of the hill, which appears like a snake's hood. The word Phani in Sanskrit means snake and Giri means hill.

It is believed to be one of the important Buddhist monasteries strategically located on the ancient trade route (Dakshinapath) connecting the west and east coast of the Deccan.

Other findings of the excavation :-
The team of the Archaeological Department found 3,730 lead coins, with an elephant on one side and the symbol of Ujjain on the other.

Officials of the Department of Archaeology and Museums have unearthed a coin hoard at the Phanigiri Buddhist site in Suryapet district. Excavation director N. Sagar and co-excavator B.  The team led by Mallu found an earthen pot measuring 16.7 cm in diameter and 15 cm in height at a depth of two feet on March 29. 3,730 lead coins were found which had an elephant symbol on one side and the symbol of Ujjain on the other. According to archaeologists, these coins belong to the Ikshvaku period, dating between the third century to the fourth century.

Apart from the coins, the archaeologists discovered stone beads, glass beads, fragments of conch shell bangles, plaster figures, broken limestone statues, a wheel of a toy cart, end nails and pottery. Phanigiri is an important Buddhist site that has recently gained the importance it deserves as several artefacts from the excavations have recently arrived at the New York Met Museum from across the world.
