Discovery of the coat of arms of India

Discovery of the coat of arms of India
The coat of arms of India was invented by Frederick Oscar Oertel (1862-1942).  He was from Hanover in Germany.

Oertel was a civil engineer.  Then there was posting in Banaras.  At that time Sarnath was the center of excavation.

Oertel received permission to excavate Sarnath in 1903.  He started the excavation in December 1904 in the harsh winter.

It was the 15th of March in the year 1905.  Buried in the soil near Dhamek Stupa, he found a piece of the lion Chaturmukh, which is today the coat of arms of India.

Oertel was then the superintending engineer.  After retiring as Chief Engineer in 1921, he went to the United Kingdom.

He resided in Teddington, United Kingdom.  He named his house "Sarnath", which reflects his love for Sarnath.
