Maitreya (Sanskrit),

#Maitreya (Sanskrit), #Metteyya (Pali), or #Maithari (Sinhala), is the future Buddha according to Buddhist beliefs.  His name '#Ajit' is also mentioned in some Buddhist texts, such as Amitabha Sutra and Saddharmapundarika Sutra.

'Ajit' means one who cannot be conquered.

#Ajanta's name also comes from the same word Ajit.

Ajit means Buddha and Ajitpuri means city of Buddha.

Present day Ajanta used to be an important Buddhist centre,

Therefore it came to be called Ajitpuri or Anchitpuri meaning Ajanta or Ajintha.

According to Buddhist traditions, Maitreya is a bodhisattva who will attain Buddhahood in the future on Earth and teach the pure Dharma.  According to the texts, Maitreya would be the successor to the current Buddha, Gautama Buddha (also known as Shakyamuni).  The prophecy of Maitreya's arrival speaks of his coming at a time when the people of the earth would have forgotten religion.

The word "Maitreya" is derived from the Sanskrit word "mitra" or "friendship". In Pali language it is "Metteya" and is mentioned in the Digha Nikaya (chapter 26) and Buddhavamsa (chapter 28) of the Pali branch.
