Tara, Buddhist Savior 12th-early 13th century,
Period: Thakurai-Early Malla period
Medium: Gilt-copper alloy with color and gold tint
Culture: Nepal (Kathmandu Valley)
In Vajrayana Buddhism Tara is the supreme protector and goddess of mercy, best understood as the female counterpart of the bodhisattva. She stands gracefully, spreading her open hand in a gesture of granting boons (Varad Mudra) to the devotees. The lotus in full bloom and her golden face indicate that she is considered to be Sitatara ("White Star"), a female form of Avalokiteshvara Padmapani.
