Vinoba Bhave, known as the 'Walking Saint', single-handedly acquired more than 1.5 million acres of agricultural land and distributed it among the poor.
He later wrote, "I peacefully demanded the land, as a son does to his father."
He had a huge contribution in the #Bhoodan movement, but very few people know that he had convinced 17 dreaded dacoits of Chambal to give up violence.
He had said there - "This is the land on which brave dacoits are born. They are not seen like the rest of the people because only their methods are different. I think they are better than the dacoits sitting in Delhi."
Urban people have hardened their hearts and minds, they only think about their own self-interests, and they can never change. But these people can change themselves.
I want them to understand my words and surrender. The solution lies in surrender, not in violence. Only non-violence can eliminate the problem of dacoity from the society."
In 1958, Vinoba Bhave was awarded the first Ramon Magsaysay Award for 'promoting a new kind of social revolution in India'.
In 1983, he was awarded India's highest civilian award, #BharatRatna.
